A Modern 12 Apostle Dies in Peace

A friend texted me this morning of this news, and I am filled with awesome peace--almost like it's some sort of holy day. I'm sure there's a beautiful heaven-party going right now to welcome home such a humble servant!

He said, " I wish i could engrave on every heart what i so keenly know & feel. I bear unwavering testimony that our Heavenly Father and his divine Son, Jesus Christ, rule & reign, & that we must all understand that the gospel is everlasting. It is forever & applicable to all, & each of us is to be held accountable."

it's tasty as is, or dump in the blender 7 puree
or even better, do half & half so you can see the gorgeous veggies

this one i stole from Maren
but people keep asking for it

Baked Brie
slice open a whole wheel of Brie ( from Costco) horizontally so you have 2 pancakes
pile a bunch of pecans & brown sugar inside ( i use the Splenda 1/2 blend)
put it back together & back in the box
bake at 350ish for 40ish minutes

meanwhile saute sliced onions in oil & more brown sugar
after you take out the Brie, unwrap the top of the box & leave the bottom so it holds it's shape

How do we know it's summer?--Super jerry-rig-slip 'n slide! It's a sheet of plastic they use for bilboards my old friend Brandon thought up while drinking PBR. The brilliant part was having it like a hammock, strung up (with extension cords?) to the railing about 15 feet above the yard. The cubicle-people in the adjacent office were shirking their work...  We rigged a hose to a chair and slathered it up with dishsoap. The bearded one is my dear, dear old friend, Ashley aka Uncle Ashley or Smash. He's known me through all my years of craziness and stuck by me as i flailed about and finally found myself. & yes, that is a dog with an apparent affinity for water slides.

I will let people know if they do it again, it is some ridiculous good clean fun..

Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo

This was Emily's brilliant idea to attend.  I'm still in total awe at the awesomeness thereof

Look! the
Rodeo queen!
Her tiara fits
over her cowboy hat!
I love the humans.

for Shelly-Bear

remember the frightening place it sounds like you might be..In rare moments of clarity when my life was very different and complicated and lived in pure Id, i would have a conversation with myself that stared with,"what if the Mormons are right?" & it would run in my head as i tried to stuff it deeper into my subconcious until i would get to--"but then i couldn't have a cold, Belgian beer in the shower...& I'D HAVE TO WEAR GARMENTS!!!" The mental conversation would always end there because that would be the end of the world.

Now i'm told that only the end of the world is the end of the world. As i spent less and less time drinking and partying, i just felt this safe, comforting ease around my Mormon friends and co-worke
rs (as i still had the gift of the Holy Ghost from when i was 8 years old, however much i'd abused him.) All it took was a few years of this crazy mental struggle and finally one day opening up the blessed BOM. I was at the cabin in Torrey in the blue bedroom. I started reading and i just knew. All the doubt & kinks of transitioning over have been worked out over time-- many times with anguish--like taking out my belly ring before i went to the temple? a personal decision, on of those tiny symbolic sacrifices...so hard to give up! I loved my little Peridot barbell. Somehow i felt it defined me. It seemed really important. But it does not and it was not.

Any sacrifices we make will be exponentially returned to us, so make them--one by one as you examine what really is important; what will be important when you are dead.

So now i do wear garments and i actually love them! (except right now b/c i sunburned the crap out of myself so i'm typing naked in my orange chair with my dirty cat as my outfit.) & honestly, as i sit here gratefully stealing internet from the neighbors, i really do believe with all my heartfelt heart and all my clever brains that when the world ends, as it obviously is headed to, or just when any joe dies and the perverbial smoke clears--each person will freak out in flabbergastation as they realize outloud, "i can not believe the Mormons were right!!"

Will you wound her? I may. Is that your intent? It is not.

Could it be any more breathtaking? (@ Alta) I cried like you should at a really good wedding. They are such good people-- i like to say these two really maximize their light of Christ.

My dear friend Erin's brother married them and he was so eloquent and captured them so well in the Hominy--He is the reason she became a pastor.  The post's title is a part of the Celtic hand-tying ceremony they did...so powerful!

A joyful reunion with my gay Steiner husband, Craig.

i hope i get better at laying stuff out. in my head it looks really sharp

My oldest sister--the other bookend--and Craig live 2 doors away in Holladay. She and i decorated the concrete cherub and gargoyle in his yard yesterday...
We build those muskles swimming across reservoirs in readiness for armageddon.
Would you believe it that Kirst was freaked out when we got there b/c her ex-band who kicked her out when she got divorced and took sides with her ex-husband were playing the gig?

She gracefully got over it and had a splendid, healing time.

yip yip for skippie

i've come back into the world after nightshifting! i am so thrilled with my life i can't even stand it!!! There is so much to do in the summer & so many wonderful new people in my life! Play Play Play! i love my job, & this part is novel--they're going to keep paying me every 2 weeks! i can't wrap my head around it, as i have struggled with money for as long as i can remember. it's been feast or famine(usually famine--there have been times in my 20's i used the food bank..)

so this week, in celebration of my REal JOB, i've decided to buy myself
a (used) roadbike!!!

i'll try ksl.com, ebay, craigslist, etc..

this is the how

An excerpt of an email i wrote my mom this morning--we commonly discuss our study of the bible & book of mormon--what we're learning & what we're excited about:

"i'm finally getting what they mean to thirst after the word & really ponder it. The big breakthrough has been using a study journal consistently (wasn't it PMG that taught us that?) I copy down the passages that hit me--the ones that are highlight-worthy & my thoughts and impressions; along with the references and all the footnotes i follow. Then the next day i go back and reread so i remember what i learned the day before. it;s awesome!"

i'm just gonna do it

i've been plagued with some noxious blog anxiety, like "it must be just right! someone may be grading me or will think what i've written is stupid!"But now that i've said it i know that it's--duh. & i'm ready to let it go. I think b/c i finally faced it in the face & named it as one of those underlying fears that make no sense but are looming and powerful until you just turn around and say,"hey! you;re not a scary monster, you;re just a silly snickerdoodle!" & then you have to giggle and go on your merry way. this is a pattern i've found with lots of things. i'm not sure i explained very well in my delerious sleep-lag, but i;m trying to tell you to face your unsaid fears & your semi-concious expectaions and give them a name. You'll say, "huh. I was expecting that other people could read my mind! hilarious!" or "oh! i was afraid that saying what i really mean might make the world implode." or "i am afraid everyone will leave me or laugh at me or eat me alive." just give these statements room to shake themselves out like wet, soppy doggies & then you will look eachother up & down and walk your separate sidewalks...

My last paper of Nursing School reads like a blog, try it!

Georgia
Journal/Exemplar/Professional Activity/LA5
4.17.2008

Wow. I can’t believe it’s really happening! It feels dreamlike and strange--like the shock of your spouses sudden death. I’m actually graduating from nursing school! A few little things this week have started to make it all more concrete: 1. the student loan exit counseling meeting thing you have to do where they tell you it’s gonna be $500/month for the next ten years; a nice reality check. 2. The little Herff-Jones tags with my name and degree printed on them came in the mail in a yellow padded mailer. I almost cried.
There’s more, so I'm just gonna spill. Last night at the library, Adam, Tawni, Jami and I were busting out our last group presentation/project of all time. It was nerve-racking and arduous, but also very entertaining. We laughed and made jokes about frameworks and imagined up a comic book called “Didactica: One student nurses adventures in evidence-based,” but you know what’s amazing is we really have acquired a very specialized, yet totally transferrable body of functional knowledge and skills through all this--despite all our complaining. We can connect once for ten minutes to delgate tasks, then meet for 2 1/2 hours the night before a presentation to brainstorm, outline, put it all together and make it come off really slick. Are these not fabulous skills? I realize that the school work itself has taught more than I may realize.
So relating to that sort of work, i’ve been bouncing this little piece of fear off people this week--that it will feel like i’ve fallen off a cliff when all the schoolwork and deadlines go away. I get so driven, so filled with purpose in the swing of a semester, that often at breaks i have little breakdowns. It’s like I’m leaning against something or pushing on it so hard & then suddenly it’s gone and I fly across the room. So i had literally prayed that somehow i could be let down slowly, somehow tapered down from such an extreme pace.
An answer came today after class and our presentation, when I headed up to the University to attend the Nursing Council meeting to fulfill my professional project assignment. I called the nurse who is actually on the schedule to find out the meeting was in room 3515c in the HSEB, but she couldn’t attend--so I represented the Burn unit for the day. I loved it! I know most would say it’s just new-grad energy, that meetings are boring; but i just loved it because it was everything we have talked about in leadership in abstract terms, in real life.
A woman from Risk Management came and told us about the defense council and it’s role and attorneys, reviewing specific cases of legal action against the U and what happened, including the charting that saved our asses. A guy from administration came and updated us on the parking and child care situations, asking for feedback. It was the perfect opportunity to share a couple of my ideas with someone in a position of power! On the parking topic, I told him my idea for a user-friendly web-based carpooling program at the U; that maybe even an FTE could be created to facilitate it because it could save so much money in parking. We all work the same shifts, right?--1800 RN’s alone are trying to park in finite spaces, and pissed they have to pay for it.
I also shared my vision of the entrance to the new remodel of the Hospital landscaped with native plants, allowing one last sliver of green space (since he told us they’re ripping up the golf course soon to build more clinics.) The U wants to be considered green, and this would really help perpetuate that illusion! But really, in the artist’s rendering of the finished project we see every day after we park our individual vehicles illegally in the visitor’s lot, shows the grounds paved over to accomodate 12 new parking spaces and planted with a handful of deciduous trees that don’t belong at the foot of such majestic wild mountains. We need sagebrush.
It felt so good to have my ideas heard, and the administrator was incredibly open. He thanked me for saying something constructive instead of saying I hated him because of the parking fiasco, and made sure the lady typing put the ideas in the minutes. How satisfying. And I can speak their language.
I suppose the preceding fits in with LA5, because i want the company, and my fellow employees to change some things. They both hold different bases power to affect change. To increase drivers or motivating forces for my carpool network, I would have to ensure that people could comfortably meet their prospective carpoolers before any commitment was made, so they could decide if anybody was a creep or a wierdo before getting in their car. Next I would calculate how much gas and parking money everyone would save. Speaking in economic terms is always the most powerful motivator for companies (and probably the nurses too.) If the U couldn’t legally facilitate it, maybe I could come up with some underground alternative, like a simple web program or email tree. I know people love their cars, but the snowballing gas bills we pay might be just the timely motivator we need to get people to cozy up. They could...talk to each other on the drive, instead of staying isolated in our expensive rolling boxes, driving alone and tired to and from places like Heber and Magna and Layton.
I have to go back to the answered prayer and the sensation of falling. So after said meeting and actually using the word deciduous to the suit, I headed over to my unit to pick up my temp license paperwork from my boss. I saw my nurse educator, who is my direct supervisor, and told her about the meeting. Now she’s the type to get jazzed over a good meeting and we got talking about how I can no longer work as an intern after my final exam and what projects I can do for hours until my license comes through. She had just this morning had a meeting with all the residents from Rehab, assessing what went wrong when one of our long term burn patients had to come back to the ICU from rehab with a pneumonia. Suffice it to say there are lots of incongruent ideas and ways of doing things between the two units. So she came back and got with the Burn PT/OTs, social workers and other managers and they dreamed up an idea for a protocol that incorporates formal phases of burn care. (I’m not sure if I’m supposed to share that so put it in your vault.)
It would involve educating staff of both units. streamlining care, and educating patients and families about what to expect. Not only does Rehab need to be educated specifically about burns, but Burn needs to be educated about proper rehab. We have a tendency to over-care for people because we get used to vents and trauma, but as people get better, they need to be allowed to struggle to butter their own toast. And there needs to be continuity and accountability. There’s that word again. I wrote my whole big paper on it that you can read. It’s painfully formal & the assignment was way too long to fit in the pages they expected. Anyway, what we decided is that I will be on the task force for this project and do the graphic design for the pamphlets, posters etc and have input on feasibility as a bedside nurse. I will have my hands in an exciting project--using the skills and energy that have been totally focused on school the past 3 years and thus, answering my seemingly dumb or unimportant prayer.
Nothing like this has been done in any of the burn centers either, so she said I can put together an abstract and present it at the American Burn Association conference next year in San Antonio! Like i said; Wow.

laptop savvy

as i'm putting the final touches on my last nursing process paper of all time, and as a proud new parent of a macbook-it strikes me that i've got to pee. So i pose to you \wait--Turkish guy in leather pants is chopping rocks in half!!/ what do i do with my computer when i have to go to the toilet? Do i take it with me? Do i ask some stranger to watch it for me? or should i bring a catheter with me next time?
